Readings

ARE 633, Spring 2004

Last update: 7 January, 2004

Due: Please see daily calendar for due dates of specific readings.

Readings will be assigned from articles and from the three required textbooks. On this webpage, the electronic readings are described.

Using Electronic Reserves

You will need some kind of program (available FREE) to read what is called "pdf" or Portable Document Format files. You may already have such a program on your computer (most newer computers do). If you don't, you can get Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 for free. Once you link to this site, scroll to the bottom of the page, click on the icon "Get Acrobat Reader" and follow instructions. It will take a few minutes to download Adobe Acrobat Reader. Once you download it, don't forget to open it up and install it. You will find that having Adobe Acrobat Reader--or some other program that lets you read pdf files--is a standard and very useful tool for reading and transferring files from the web to your home computer.

Access the course reserves at http://eres.library.arizona.edu/

* Choose the Search for Reserves link
* From the next screen you can search for your course by department or instructor.
* Choose your course buy clicking on it on the next screen.
* Enter the course password provided by your instructor and choose the Accept button below the copyright statement.

The password is listed on the sheet about the course given to you the first day of class. If this is not available, please check with another student using the Class List or ask Dr. Garber. Once you have entered your password, you will see the readings and can click on the one(s) you want to see. If your computer is set up to do so, you may print the readings. The library staff advises that printing articles from electronic reserves is fast and easy in the Information Commons.

Please plan ahead!

Make sure that you can download the readings ahead of time. If you are having problems, try a university lab or get the readings ahead of time from Dr. Garber and photocopy them (there is a folder of readings available for 30 minute check-out). (A final alternative is to find the readings in the library stacks. Full citations of each article or book chapter are included below.)

If you are new to downloading files, make sure either that you know where downloaded files go on your computer, or that you note the name of the file you are downloading so that you can successfully complete a "find" search for it on your computer.

Problems? If they are with the legibility of the readings or printing, please contact library personnel from the Reserve Reading Room. If you would like to borrow and copy the readings, please contact Dr. Garber (egarber@email.arizona.edu).

Criteria and Grading: Reading responses are graded with a +, , or - (plus, check, minus). A plus is equivalent to an A, a check to a C, and a minus to no credit. You may re-submit an assignment graded with a minus and the first and second grades will be averaged.
