School of Art Admission Requirements for Fall 2009

Each program may require additional application materials. Please make note of this on your application. Use the following list for reference only:

Bachelor of Arts – Art History

• College of Fine Arts application

• Letter of Intent

• 500-Word Essay addressing "Why is art history an important discipline?"


Bachelor of Arts – Studio Art (No Concentration – General Liberal Arts Degree Program)

• College of Fine Arts application

• Portfolio containing eight original images


Bachelor of Fine Arts – Art Education (Concentration in Teaching K-12 or Community/Museum Outreach)

• College of Fine Arts application

• Letter of Intent

• 500-Word Essay addressing “What is the role(s) of art and art education within contemporary society?”


Bachelor of Fine Arts – Studio Art
(Concentration in 2D, 3D, Photography or * Pre-Visual Communication: Illustration + Graphic Design)

* Pre-Visual Communication students are required to pass a secondary portfolio review. They must complete or be enrolled in ART 101, 102, 104, 265, 266, Art History 201 & 202. Major GPA of 3.0 is required upon admittance.

Guidelines

Letter of Intent

• Provide a brief history of your interest in and involvement with art.

• Clarify why you want to enter the BA or the BFA degree program.

• Explain your long-term career goals.


Portfolio

• Provide eight original images

• Recommended size is 640 pixels with the longest dimension being no longer than 800 pixels.

 

Portfolio Evaluation Criteria

Technical Proficiency / Craftsmanship:
Effectiveness of individual project’s fabrication as evidenced by:
• Creative and innovative technical problem solving
• Mastery of techniques and formal elements employed (composition, line, value, etc.)

Concept:
Student’s investment in and thoughtfulness of subject-matter/idea as evidenced by:
• Creative and innovative intellectual problem solving
• Ability of finished work to communicate chosen subject matter
• Evidence of critical thinking / conceptual exploration
Presentation:
• Degree to which documentation clearly and qualitatively displays work

Creativity / Inventiveness:
• Some of the projects indicate a motivation to generate work outside of assigned projects
• Projects clearly generated for assignments push beyond formulaic responses

Arizona Community Foundation Arts Scholars Program:

The Arizona Community Foundation Arts Scholars Program provides talented student artists in Arizona with scholarship funding, registration fee waivers, academic and artistic mentoring, and opportunities for enhanced study either nationally or internationally. The scholarship is $5,000 per academic year for up to four years. The goal is to help keep Arizona's best and brightest artistic talent within the state's university system. Arts Scholars Program scholarships are awarded for all arts disciplines, including dance, theatre, music, and visual and media arts.

The Arizona Community Foundation Arts Scholars Program offers four scholarships to incoming UA College of Fine Arts Freshmen.
