THE SCHOOL Visual Arts Graduate Research Laboratory Director's Fund For Excellence Visiting Artists and Scholars Endowment THE ART ADVISORY BOARD CONTINUUM COMMITTEES |
The School Mission Statement: The School of Art is devoted to a rigorous and dynamic education in the visual arts, challenging students to think, research, produce, and teach art critically, with an awareness of historical as well as contemporary contexts. Vision Statement: The School of Art is committed to preparing students for careers in Studio Art, Art History, and Art and Visual Culture Education in an increasingly diverse and technological world. We extend our commitment to the university community by providing non-majors with an understanding of the vital role that the visual arts play in society through our General Education offerings. The School of Art provides distinguished undergraduate, graduate and doctoral instruction that emphasizes critical thinking in all aspects of learning, excelling in creative and scholarly research while striving to expand and diversify our curricular and program offerings. The Visual Arts Graduate Research Laboratory The Visual Arts Graduate Research laboratory is a new 25,000 square foot facility that includes 50 artist’s studios, a wood and metal fabrication shop, a seminar room, an art gallery, and an outdoor sculpture garden. The facility will, for the first time in the history of the school, house all studio art graduate students in the same location. It will help foster a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of artists, with students, faculty, and visiting artists and scholars interacting as they explore ideas, obtain knowledge and share techniques. The new space will have a far-reaching impact, enriching the lives of current students, enhancing the recruitment and retention of future students, and furthering the career placement of graduating students. In order to integrate the new building into the surrounding neighborhood, plans are underway to re-design the building’s façade. Director Dennis L. Jones has been working with the School of Art’s Professor Jackson Boelts and Associate Professor Laurie Johnson in the College of Architecture, who have brought the project into their courses. Design proposals were submitted last fall and are under consideration with our commissioned architects. Director’s Fund for Excellence The School of Art Director’s Fund for Excellence is a new fund created to provide support for creative projects, help develop new skills in digital arts technology, allow the development of important new program initiatives and interdisciplinary projects, help recruit and retain the most qualified and talented students and faculty, and provide both domestic and international travel support for students invited to exhibitions, conferences, and competitions. It will also be used to enhance and sustain the Visual Arts Graduate Research Laboratory. In order for the facility to continue in the future to serve graduate students, it must remain state-of-the-art. The building will receive maintenance and upkeep, supplies and equipment for the studios, technical support for the shops, and technology upgrades for the classroom, shops and gallery. Visiting Artists and Scholars Endowment The School of Art has long considered the Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture program to be a critical part of its overall mission. The program has been active for over twenty-five years, with its primary goal to increase understanding of contemporary American art by exposing students, faculty, and community members to nationally and internationally recognized art leaders from beyond the community. With an average of ten visitors annually, the School of Art has hosted over 250 individuals since its inception. Included among these are: Alice Aycock, Michael Ray Charles, Allan de Souza, Douglas Druick, Jimmie Durham, Lalla A. Essaydi, Luis Gispert, Andy Grundberg, Edgar Heap of Birds, John Hitchcock, Stephen Kurtz, Suzanne Lacy, Jaune Quick-To-See-Smith, Guillermo Gomez Pena, Adrian Piper, Patterson Sims, William T. Wiley. Get up to date information on this year’s series at: http://www.art.arizona.edu/vase |
