Guidelines for Graduate Concerts in Dance

(In fulfillment of the MFA in Dance/Choreography)

The following are the options and guidelines for those students pursuing the choreography track, whose design of study includes a fully produced concert performance of their works.

There are several venues in town in which a student may elect to present their work. These guidelines pertain primarily to concerts given in the Stevie Eller Dance Theater.

Any request to schedule a graduate concert must be submitted, in writing, at least three months prior to the requested date. Requests for concert dates must be submitted to the Head of the Dance Division no later than May 1 for fall concerts and September 1 for spring concerts.

Any date granted will require three weeks clearance in the Gittings Theatre schedule before and after the concert.

Requests for concert dates will be given the following priorities in descending order:

  • Concerts of three student choreographers
  • Concerts of two student choreographers
  • Solo concerts

During the week of the concert, rehearsals can be scheduled no earlier than 7:30 and no later than 11:30.

Invited choreographers from outside the campus community can present work that constitutes no more than 25% of the performance.

In the event that a concert performance of a student’s work is part of the design of their study, there are three options:

OPTION A: A concert of works by two or three choreographers

Option A is for two or three choreographers who wish to present their own work.

The student choreographers may elect to present only one concert. In this case, the following guidelines apply:

  • The choreographers may keep the resultant ticket sales for the concert.
  • Rental of the performance space (room 124 and 130 combined) is $15.00 an hour with a four-hour minimum and 24 hours maximum for technical rehearsals. In addition, there is a $100.00 rental fee for the hall for the performance
  • The cost of technical support (including a the work of a stage manager, lighting designer and/or production manager) is the responsibility of the choreographers. A preliminary technical meeting between the technical crew, choreographers and advisors is required at least two months in advance of the performance.
  • The choreographer(s) are responsible for all of the production and promotional costs for the performance(s) except where noted above.
  • The concert(s) cannot be longer than 2 and a half hours total.

NOTE: If the choreographers elect to present two performances, the Dance Division keeps $500 or the gate for the second show (whichever is larger)

OPTION B: A concert of works by one to three student choreographers

  • Each choreographer receives a $600 budget
  • There is no rental charge for using the Ina Gittings Dance Theater
  • The Dance Division retains the receipts from the gate
  • Single choreographers may only present one performance
  • Shared concerts have the option of presenting one or two performances.
  • The Dance Division sets the price for the tickets.
  • The Dance Division will provide technical support, including a production manager and stage manager. A preliminary technical meeting between the technical crew, choreographers and advisors is required at least two months in advance of the performance.
  • This option does not include services of the staff costumer.
  • Maximum 24 hours for technical rehearsals
  • Concert(s) cannot be longer than 2 and a half hours total
  • The choreographer(s) are responsible for all of the production and promotional costs for the performance(s) except where noted above.
