A Practical Approach to the Contemporary Flute Literature

April 12, 2008 9:00 AM • Lecture Hall 146

Christina Ballatori, presenter

The contemporary flute literature includes many interesting works that offer performers the opportunity and creative freedom to explore a wide variety of tonal effects and colors not found in the standard repertoire. For those unfamiliar with this style of music, approaching this literature for the first time is often intimidating.  Decoding unfamiliar notation, learning to execute the various extended techniques and attempting to incorporate all of this information into a convincing interpretation can be overwhelming.

It does not need to be!

By exploring Toru Takemitsu’s Voice for Solo Flutist  (1971) and discussing practical methods for approaching, learning and performing this music, this participatory workshop will offer flutists interested in discovering the contemporary literature strategies for approaching other works in the genre. Bring your flutes!
