UA Concert Jazz Band

The UA School of Music presents “A Little More Soul,” the UA Concert Jazz Ensemble's first concert of the 2009-2010 season. The free-admission concert begins at 7:30 in Crowder Hall, Tuesday, November 3.   One of the unique aspects of this ensemble that might seem out of the norm is that it is actually deeply rooted in tradition. Early jazz had the usual characteristic of having a tuba provide the bottom end to the band. In the middle of the 20th century, the tuba lost popularity in jazz and was almost entirely replaced by the string bass. The reasons for the tuba losing its place in the big band were mostly due to the technical challenges that the instrument faced and also due to the timbre for which most contemporary composers of the time were searching. The tuba has remained in the jazz world mostly in the recreation of classic jazz styles such as Dixieland music, but is on occasion used in modern jazz.  One major example of this is in the famous landmark album by Miles Davis, called “Birth of the Cool.” The UA Concert Jazz Band brings this characteristic back in the big band repertoire in a “tasty” way by using the tuba in various styles such as samba and swing.   The program will include a couple of jazz classics such as Horace Silver’s “Nica’s Dream” and Sammy Nestico’s delightful trombone feature, “Tall Cotton.” Also, the ensemble has had the opportunity to play some great contemporary repertoire from different composers such as “Drip Dry” written by Bob Enevoldsen, “A Band’s Gotta Do What A Band’s Gotta Do!” written by Paul Clark, and the concert’s title piece, “A Little More Soul” by Jeff Taylor.   The concert will feature some of the university's finest music students. Soloists will include Joey Ewer (baritone saxophone); Abigail Puzzo (trombone); David Allen (bass trombone); David Hunter (trumpet); Christian Lopez (trombone); Christopher Marin (guitar); Lisa Carron (alto saxophone); Jennifer Johnson (drums); and many more. The University of Arizona Concert Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Jason Carder and Jose Barnett.
