Bio

Michael Dauphinais (M.Mus., Arizona State University; B.Mus., Western Michigan University) is a well-respected collaborative pianist, often sought out by opera companies and recitalists alike. He has recently served as a coach/accompanist at several opera companies including Arizona Opera, Sarasota Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera Southwest (Albuquerque) and New Jersey Opera Theatre. Mr. Dauphinais has also performed as music director for the education and outreach programs at San Diego Opera and Arizona Opera, and has served as a staff pianist for the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.

As an accompanist and chamber musician, he has performed throughout the United States, Ireland, Austria, and Mexico, and has performed in radio broadcasts on WUOL in Louisville, WMUK in Kalamazoo and KPBS in San Diego. Mr. Dauphinais has performed in recital with mezzo-soprano Kristin Dauphinais, baritone Charles Roe, soprano Lisa Williamson, tenor Nathan Granner (of “The American Tenors”), the vocal chamber ensemble Lyrika, cellist Harvey Wolfe, and with tuba virtuoso Oystein Baadsvik. He has recently played recitals with several members of the Tucson Symphony orchestra, including principal oboist Lindabeth Binkley, principal clarinetist Jeremy Reynolds, associate concertmaster Carla Ecker, bassoonist Rebecca Cain and flutist Sandra Schwobel. The ITEA Journal wrote that Dauphinais
“is a marvelous collaborative pianist” in its review of the CD Appetizers with Kelly Thomas (UA professor of tuba/euphonium) on the Mark Records Classical label.

An enthusiastic advocate for contemporary music, Mr. Dauphinais has performed music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Walker under the composer’s direction, and has also performed music by John Cage with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. In 2008 he premiered two works for piano and live electronics: Stephan Moore’s Moving Target and the first complete performance of John King’s 23 Rubai’yat. In December 2009 Mr. Dauphinais will perform music by Stockhausen with ACME at Arizona State University.

Michael Dauphinais is an adjunct instructor of piano and collaborative piano at the University of Arizona, and is the voice coach for UA Opera Theater.
