MA - Stage and Screen Studies

MA Stage and Screen Studies - now accepting applications for Fall 2012

The new graduate degree,  Master of Arts with a major in Stage and Screen Studies (SASS) brings together the faculty and curricular focus of both programs under the umbrella of the new School of Theatre, Film and Television.

Please adhere to the Graduate College application deadlines for fall 2012 admissions.

The Master of Arts in Stage and Screen Studies is an innovative new two-year graduate program that allows students to integrate their studies of the theories, practices and histories of theatre, film, and television. The degree incorporates coursework and requirements from all three areas but allows students the flexibility to focus on a single area if they choose to. Students take 20 units of required core courses in theatre, film and television and an additional 12 units of electives where students can choose to focus in one area or continue with a broad based approach.

Deficiencies and Transfer Credit

Students who elect to take an MA in Stage and Screen Studies have normally completed an undergraduate degree in Theatre and/or Film and Television, including courses in theatre, film and/or television history and production, or their equivalents as indicated by practical experience in the theatre, film and/or television.  If an applicant's undergraduate work is considered deficient for advanced work, additional work will be required at the undergraduate level for undergraduate credit. A plan for making up deficiencies will be based on the individual student’s undergraduate degree, transcript and resume.

Only Six (6) transfer hours of graduate courses in Theatre Arts may be applied toward the degree, and there must be documented evidence of equivalency. Candidates must fulfill the requirements of the Graduate college. Candidates must also complete all requirements within a six-year period.

MA in Stage and Screen Studies Curriculum

Students take thirty-two (32) credit hours of course work. The program includes comprehensive Master's exams taken in the third semester and a Master’s Report. The degree is designed to prepare students for doctoral programs in theatre, film and television studies and/or practical applications in theatre, film and television industries.

  • Graduate level production courses in theatre and/or film and television.
  • Courses 500 level or above from departments outside the School

  • Advancement to candidacy (end fo the first year review)

  • Graduate committee

Graduate Entrance Requirements & Procedures

The deadline for applications is May 1, 2012. International students should apply by December 1st to make sure that there is enough time to obtain a visa if the student is admitted. There are no Spring/Summer admissions for Graduate Students.

Students accepted by the School are then recommended to the Graduate College for acceptance. The student must be accepted by the Graduate College to enter the program. A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 over the last 60 credits of course work is required for admission to the Graduate College.

Apply on-line through the Graduate College Application Portal. Each degree specialization has its own admission requirements which are submitted on-line with the Graduate College application. For the MA in Stage and Screen Studies, submit the following materials:

  • Official transcripts from ALL previous colleges and universities attended
  • Statement of Intent
  • Résumé listing theatre, film and/or television experiences
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A manuscript of a 10-15 page research or critical paper in theatre, film and/or television
  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
For International Students:

·         TOEFL (The Graduate College requires a TOEFL score  of 550 (Paper Based), 213 (Computer Based), or 79 (internet-Based Test) or higher and dated within two years of the intended term of enrollment.)

Graduate Assistantships

Students accepted into the MA are considered for graduate assistantships in teaching, which provide students with on-the-job training in the areas of teaching at the college level.

Financial Aid

The School awards a variety of financial aid on the basis of talent and merit, including scholarships and fellowships, nonresident tuition and registration fee waivers.
