BA - Theatre Arts

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts focuses on theatre within the context of a liberal arts education. Students in the program develop a broad understanding of theatre by taking a core of theatre courses including an introduction to acting, technical theatre, dramatic literature, theatre history and theatre electives. The BA also requires four semesters of a foreign language and the completion of a minor in a related discipline. BA students may obtain production experience through participation in technical theatre crews for all School productions, as well as through performance opportunities in theatre education and outreach and student-directed one-act plays and workshop productions. The BA is not for those seeking professional training in acting, design, technical theatre, dramaturgy, or theatre education and outreach, but rather for those students who wish to explore theatre in its relation to other fields. The BA is a suitable degree for those planning to pursue graduate study in theatre.

Application Requirements

Freshmen, Transfer and Change of Major

• Admission to the University of Arizona
• College of Fine Arts Application
• A résumé outlining theatre experiences, academic achievements and/or community service activities.
• A 500 word typed essay describing your interest in pursuing a general liberal arts degree in theatre and your long-term goals. Also address how you might broaden your study of theatre in combination with substantial elective units outside the major and a minor (e.g., a language, history, women's studies).
• Two letters of recommendation from teachers, advisors or any adult (not from your immediate family) who can assess your theatre work, academic potential, and ability to be self-directed.

Assessment of Application Materials:

Applicants will be assessed based on clear articulation of plans to pursue a general liberal arts degree in theatre in combination with electives and a minor, previous theatre experiences, and academic potential.

Retention in the BA in Theatre

• Meet all University of Arizona academic standards for continuing status.
• Completion of all Tier One General Education and Foundations requirements within the first 60 units.
