Design/Technology

The Design and Technology Division offers comprehensive training to students who seek careers in the professional theatre. This training is through a balance of academic study of theatre and production responsibilities.

Course work is a combination of study of:

  • theatrical history and literature
  • design theory and history
  • design analysis, conceptualization, and presentation
  • relevant crafts and skills such as construction, cutting and draping, drawing and rendering, drafting, digital imaging, electronics, hydraulics, model-making, properties, research, tailoring, and others.

Objectives of the Design/Technology Training Program

The Design and Technology Program is committed to:

  • Preparing students for work in the professional theatre
  • Providing students with the artistic, analytical, and research skills required in developing designs for period and contemporary theatrical productions
  • Providing students with a thorough understanding of the collaborative theatrical production process
  • Providing students with craft and artisan skills in one or more areas of design to support theatrical production
  • Provide students training in design expression and portfolio presentation
  • Prepare students for further graduate training or professional work by helping develop a comprehensive and representative portfolio
